How to write better Meta Titles, Descriptions, and H1s (and why these matter)
1. What Are These Things?
Meta Title
This is the blue headline people see on Google when your website shows up.
Think of it as the title of your “shop window” on Google.
A good meta title tells people:
- What you offer
- Where you are
- Why they should click your result instead of someone else’s
Meta Description
This is the short two-line summary under your Google listing.
It reassures travellers that your place is the right choice and encourages them to click.
A good description should:
- Sound welcoming
- Mention your location
- Highlight a key benefit (parking, views, spacious rooms, family-friendly, etc.)
- Encourage action (“Book direct & save”)
H1 Heading
This is the main title at the top of the page people see after they click your website.
Think of it like the “big sign above reception” — it tells visitors they’re in the right place.
A good H1 should:
- Match what the page is about
- Be clear and simple
- Include your location or room type
Why These Three Matter
- Google uses them to understand your page
- Visitors use them to decide if they should choose you
- They help you appear for the right searches
- Clear titles = more clicks = more bookings (especially direct bookings)
This is one of the easiest, fastest SEO improvements any motel or hotel can make.
2. How to Write Them Well (Easy Motel/Hotel Formula)
Meta Title Format (60 characters max including spaces)
Room/Hotel Type + Location + Key Selling Point
Examples:
- “Affordable Motel Accommodation in Taupō | Free Parking”
- “Lakefront Rooms in Queenstown | Modern & Spacious”
- “Family Motel in Rotorua | Close to Attractions”
Meta Description Format (150–160 characters including spaces)
Wording that feels local, personal, and reassuring
Examples:
- “Comfortable, clean rooms in the heart of Rotorua. Free parking, WiFi and easy access to attractions. Book direct for best rates.”
- “Modern lakeview accommodation in Queenstown, perfect for couples and families. Free parking and self-contained units.”
- “Affordable motel in Christchurch with spacious rooms and friendly Kiwi hospitality. Close to shops and transport.”
H1 Heading (what appears on your page)
Try and keep this within 65 to 80 charaters including spaces
Be clear, not clever
Examples:
- “Modern Motel Accommodation in Taupō”
- “Studio Units in Wanaka”
- “Family Apartments in Nelson”
- “Queen Rooms – Comfortable & Affordable”
