Configuring the 3DS Challenge Indicator in SeekomPay
The 3DS Challenge Indicator allows you to control the level of authentication required for online payments, offering flexibility to balance security and guest convenience. This guide will walk you through the steps to configure the 3DS challenge Indicator for your property..
What is the 3DS Challenge Indicator?
The 3DS Challenge Indicator determines how strict the 3D Secure authentication process should be during a transaction. It communicates your preferences to the payment gateway and the cardholder's bank, allowing you to influence the security measures applied.
Here are the available options for the challenge indicator:
- No Preference - Let the bank decide if extra security is needed.
No preference is indicated; the bank decides whether to challenge the transaction. *It is important to note that relying on the bank to make the decision does not guarantee the best outcome. In some cases, transactions may fail if the necessary validation isn’t applied, even when the bank chooses not to challenge. - Least Security - Avoid extra security checks.
Indicates that no challenge is requested for the transaction. - More Security - Ask for extra security checks more often.
3DS Requestor Preference: Indicates that a challenge is requested based on your preference. - Required Security - Always use extra verification when rules require it.
Indicates that a challenge is required due to a mandate or other policy.
Understanding the 3dsecure (3DS) Parameter and challenge Indicator
The 3dsecure parameter is used to request whether 3D Secure authentication is triggered for a transaction. 3D Secure adds an extra layer of security by requiring the cardholder to verify their identity during the payment process.
3DS Options:
- Optional: 3D Secure authentication is triggered only if the card issuer requires it. If not required, the transaction proceeds without 3D Secure. Recommended for Australasia.
- Mandatory: 3D Secure authentication is always triggered, regardless of the card issuer's requirements. * Note if set to Mandatory and the card doesn’t have 3DS, it will decline (e.g., virtual credit cards).
Challenge Indicator:
The Challenge Indicator is an additional parameter that specifies how the 3D Secure authentication should behave. It allows you to request a specific type of challenge (e.g., a more rigorous authentication process)
Example Scenarios:
Optional 3D Secure without challenge Indicator
3DS: Optional
Challenge Indicator: No Preference
3D Secure will only happen if the card issuer supports it.
Mandatory 3D Secure with challenge Indicator
3DS: Mandatory
Challenge Indicator: Required Security
3D Secure authentication will always happen, and the challenge will follow the specified challenge indicator. If the card does not support 3D Secure, the transaction will decline immediately.
Steps to Configure the 3DS Challenge Indicator for your property:
Select Payment Gateway from the menu under Interfaces
Under your username and password, you will see 3DS and the Challenge Indicator
